the project

The Women and Children's House of Hope is a project which serves homeless women and children as they are moving out of shelters toward a more independent living style.

This shared Housing Project serves as a bridge between shelter living and permanent housing while the single parent obtains the necessary training enabling her to achieve the skills to become independent and maintain her own household. This project specifically targets homeless persons who begin to demonstrate the ability to live independently and have the desire and motivation for bettering their life situation through education and/or job training.

The house functions under the supervision of an executive director and two assistants, with many volunteer goups. Now celebrating over 10 year of existence, The Women and Children's House of Hope has supported the transformation of over 30 women and 100 children.

the goals

"If you think you can or you can’t
you’re always right"    Henry Ford
To provide a wholistic program of growth for women to continue their journey of personal development toward self-sufficiency and independent living during these two years. The program will be open to residents and a selected group of non-residents.
To provide safe, decent and affordable housing for four to six families of women and children for a two year period.

To assist residents to locate and secure daycare for their children, possibly even within the house.

To identify various training and educational programs in which program participants may enroll.

To engage women in their own process of growth, not only through participation in the program content, but to assist them in the development of relationships not only with one another but also with a personal mentor who will encourage, support and accompany the individual in her process.

criteria for participation

Homeless women with children who have been recommended by transitional shelters, other programs or agencies.

Homeless women who have a strong desire to change and a willingness to share the process with other women in a similar program.

Women with children who are willing to pay 30% of their income for rent.

Women willing to contribute 20% of Food Stamps or a fair share of income toward monthly food costs.

Women who are willing to participate in the personal development program even if they are actively employed.

a mission

This project reflects the mission of the Society of Helpers. Recognizing the dynamic presence of God in our world, Helpers seek to establish mutual respect among all people, so that the absolute value of every human being, especially the poor and the neediest, be recognized.

Convinced that Gospel values are already present in persons and groups in our midst, the Helpers see the Women and Children's House of Hope as a means to restore and support the dignity of homeless persons , especially women and children and to enable them to fulfill their human potential.
